The Bundesrat must legalize cannabis

Madeleine Linke, state chairwoman of Alliance 90/The Greens Saxony-Anhalt, comments on the current debate on a possible blockade of the cannabis law by the CDU/CSU in the Bundesrat:

“The CDU/CSU have made it clear that they want to stick to their failed drug policy. The ‘law on the controlled use of cannabis’ is to be stopped in the mediation committee between the Bundesrat and the Bundestag using procedural tricks. The SPD, FDP and Greens in the federal states must not fall for the CDU/CSU’s tricks now. The law must therefore not be referred to the mediation committee.”

„By legalizing cannabis, we are focusing on reason instead of criminalization.“

Madeleine Linke

Linke continued: “Yes, the cannabis law is not perfect. But it is a big step forward compared to the nonsensical drug policy that has been in force in Germany up to now. It means more freedom and safety for consumers. The licensed and controlled distribution of cannabis significantly weakens the black market.

By legalizing cannabis, we are focusing on reason instead of criminalization. This is a drug policy approach that we Greens have been fighting for for decades. The new cannabis law protects consumers, young people and health. And in the long term, it will relieve the burden on the police and judiciary, who will no longer have to deal with criminal proceedings against small-scale users.”
