Comments on the European election results

Dennis Helmich, state chairman of Alliance 90/The Greens, comments on the outcome of the European elections:

“First of all, we would like to thank all voters who voted for us and other democratic parties. We Greens did everything we could here in Saxony-Anhalt to achieve good election results. We would like to thank all our campaigners. They did a great job in difficult times! All democratic parties have been under heavy fire in recent weeks. As a society, we must never accept physical attacks on campaigners as the norm!”

Helmich continued: “This makes the results that are already emerging in the early election evening in the forecasts all the more disappointing. We had hoped to come close to the record result of the 2019 European elections, but we clearly did not succeed. We will actively participate in the internal party review of this result at national level.

Here in eastern Germany in particular, we have to speak of a renewed slide to the right. The far-right AfD was able to significantly improve its European result – despite all the scandals surrounding its lead candidate.”

Thea-Helene Gieroska, Green Party European candidate from Magdeburg, added: “I am grateful that I was able to get to know so many people in Saxony-Anhalt during the election campaign who are passionate about Europe. I would like to thank the democratic competitors, especially Thomas Rieke, for the fair European election campaign.”
