Children’s Day: No child should have to live in poverty

On the occasion of International Children’s Day on June 1, 2023, the state chairman of Alliance 90/The Greens Saxony-Anhalt, Dennis Helmich, states:

“Every fourth child in Saxony-Anhalt, over 80,000 young people, are affected by poverty. Especially children of single parents, mostly women, are particularly often affected by poverty and every fifth child in the entire Federal Republic is currently at risk of poverty. Now, in times of continuing inflation, the situation is only becoming more dramatic. Families who are currently entitled to benefits often do not take advantage of them – out of shame of stigmatization, fear of bureaucracy or simply because they are unaware of benefits to which they are entitled. This situation is untenable for a strong welfare state. We must finally address this injustice in a sustainable way!

That is why the basic child benefit must finally be introduced. This project of the traffic light coalition has a high priority from Saxony-Anhalt’s point of view! The basic security will be the most effective tool to finally fight child poverty effectively. It will make life easier for all affected families, because unnecessarily complicated bureaucracy will be eliminated and the money will finally arrive properly.”
